shohin ponderosa

Now this is an extreme rarity. It is a ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa which is about 15 cm high only (6 inches!). For some silly reason I totally missed before images. Well, anyway, it was collected in Wyoming a few years ago. Today I plucked the old needles and wired it right away. This will be a jewel eventually.

A remarkable little tree! I live where they grow and see lots of seedlings - but none like this. How do you get the needles so small? They look only about 1 1/2" long.
