European spruce #29

European spruce, Picea abies, collected in Italy in 1996. First image as of 1999. After many years this tree got a new pot by Derek Aspinall and a new outfit.

This is incredible. You managed to change a terrible tree in something interesting - I didn't say beautiful, but interesting. You really are a great bonsaïst.

Thanks for the compliment, but it is not deserved:

1) the tree was never terrible. I have picked it from hundreds of thousands others because I saw in it what now finally is the outcome. This is a skill one has to learn. I run seminars about it in my Bonsai Academy.

2) a piece of art does NOT have to be beautiful to be good. Bonsai in general are styled to be beautiful. In 'real' art this is considered kitsch - cheap!
