lilac #1

Lilac, Syringa vulgaris, garden-yamadori, more than 80 years old. This year no flowers because I did a total defoliation last year.

Hi Walter, in a recent corespondence you wrote that total defoliation was obsolete in modern bonsai, yet here you write that you deoliated last year. Are there exceptions?

Regards,
Matt

Matt,

in general this is true. On lilacs I sometimes still do it as they are extremely tough trees. But as you see the problem is that they will not produce flower buds if the defoliation is done a bit too late.
I would not advise the general bonsai practitioner to do a total defoliaton on any tree. This does not mean that professionals would still do it on occasion. But they know very well what can and will happen.
