At the spruce collecting grounds

Was in the mountains to see how the spruce are doing. They are still frozen.

Walter, are you planning to collect spruce before or after this years new growth extends?

Dave,

Spruce in the mountains open the buds by beginning of June!! That's a good time to collect there. Down in the flatlands the best time WAS by the end of April.

Hello Walter,

I know it must be annoying by now because it has been asked over and over again. But, I seem to understand collection times differently with every different thread. For Spruce is the best time the fall like you mention in another thread or is is the spring before the roots become active like most trees seem to prefer?

Thank you for keeping us entertained and educated.

The best time for spruce is late summer, beginning of Augst in the mountains, middle of August until middle of September. Not later. Spring is fine for most trees. But rather later than earlier. Fro spruce June is fine. It is NOT true that the tree has to be dormant. That's bad, the tree has to be already grwowing.
