results of hedge pruning

Here a few Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum) that I have hedge pruned three weeks ago and where I did total defoliation. One can see that I have a big problem: way too many tiny shoots.It will be necessary to thin out the crown soon. Long internodes and other faults which they say the method causes I cannot see.
