Walter Pall's main blog about bonsai and his work with trees from day to day. Lots of good pictures of good trees and lots of valuable information about bonsai.
This fat man is one of my favourite trees of yours Walter.
is the hackleberry related to the huckleberry ?
Don't think so.
A huckleberry is a variety of wild blueberry, at least in NE USA.Now back to hackberry, genus Celtis. The Japanese hackberry, Celtis Sinensis has played a noble part in European art. The Impressionists were very much taken with the flood of Japanese woodcuts that entered France in that era, especially those of Hokusai and Hiroshige. The latter, especially, impressed Van Gogh, with his woodblock print of a Hackberry surrounded by fox spirits. (That hackberry image is an amazing "Informal Upright", in bonsai-speak.) So, impressed, that Van Gogh moved to Arles expressly to paint the trees there, mostly olives. I intend to write a short article about this, with pictures, in my blog: http://treeherdbonsai.blogspot.com/
