Europen beech defoliation

Hi Walter, i have 2 collected American Beeches, which over about 5 years have lost about half of their leaf size...still a ways to go though. For some reason i have been ubnder the impression that beeches should not be defoliated. If this is possible then i think i may be able to reduce the leaves more quickly. Thanks for your blog and your comments on this.
