what tool(s) and carving bit(s) would you say works most effective when it working on this type of hollow carving?

You need a heavy duty die grinder with variable speed from 10,000 to 25,000 rpm.
Then you need an assortment of heavy duty bits which are well chosen for usage with bonsai carving. A torch is useful too. In the end you need small bits for usage on a dremel type of die grinder.
