Mugo Pine #57

Finally the pine went into this fine pot by Horst Heinzlreiter. The substrate is pure pumice without anything else -  by IBUKI. The old needles were not plucked to give the tree strength to recover from the repoting. In summer of 2017 the old wire will go off and the pine will get completely wired again. Then it will look really good. We'll see.

Why do you repot in august? Is this time better for pines?

I repot now because it is a VERY good time.

What's special about IBUKI pumice?

It's cheap, sieved, avaiable in all sorts of grain, packed in handy bags. It can oly be beat pricewise if you buy very large bags and sieve them yourself.

Is august also a good time to collect mugo pines from the wild?

It is simple: when it's a good time to repot a tree it is a good time to collect it. Second part of August is a very good time.

Hi Walter,
Why pure pumice? To make it even better drained than 'normal' mix? Is the extra drainage better for mugos or pines in general?
Finally, do you fertilize pure pumice even more than your standard 'killing' dosage (2 -3 times more than recomended)? ;)

Ratal,
pure pumice because it works best for larger conifers and also broadleaved trees. Randy Knight pots thousands of trees into pure pumice with great success. Trees worth 5,ooo US$ go into pure pumice there. Do you think he would not take somethng better if it existed?
Same watering adn feeding regime. works extrelmely well. Would I not take something better for this tree if it existed, regardless of cost?

Walter,
I thought that addition of some high CEC, water holding ingridient would be beneficial. But I do not have a problem with accepting what you are saying.
Thanks for the lesson, I'll try that myself next season.

All the best,
Rafal
