Trident maple #9

Trident maple, Acer burgerianum, pot China. Some will remember that I repotted this tree last August with all foliage still on. Many thoght that I am kind of mad. Now see how well it is doing. Also many said that the pot was way too big and heavy. See the pot now.

Dear Walter,
on picture Nr 14 and on some after that, there seems to be a big hole in the first half of the trunk, while that hole doesn't show on some others.
Does that hole exist, or is it just an informatic construction?
Best regards

Jean-Paul,

this hole exists. It will become smaller eventually. If not it is also OK. I personally think that holes can addd character to such a tree. Traditionalists insist that a broadleaved tree should, have no holes. I don't care abut that.

Dear Walter,
many thanks for your answer.
Is that hole - which doesn't bother me either, and which can effectively add to the beauty of your tree - the sign of a bonsai that was made, a long time ago, with more than one tree?
Best regards
Jean-Paul

Jean-Paul,

where the how is was a vertical branch or sub-trunk. It was a sacrifice branch to enhance the nebari. When the branch was cut off it left a huge wound. This did not close yet. Probably because soon afterwards the final branches were defined and the growth of the tree was considerably slowed down. Now, with my aggressive regime it will close again, I think.

Walter,

Beautiful specimen! When in leaf it appears very symmetrical (in photographs at least). Do you see this tree remaining symmetrical in the future, or do you plan on putting more movement in its canopy? I would like to see more movement and asymmetry to pair with the trunk. Either way it is a magnificent tree.

Matt, it appears more symmetrical than it is. It has definitely more weigth to the right side and will have enven more so in the future.
