Now this is bonsai! I am also creating a hollow trunk on a zelkova. Is there something special you do to preserve the hollowed trunk of the tree?

Nothing new, a white wall which I paint gray-blue, and a black clothe which is simply black.

Marc, do nothing, the wood may well decay over time. The tree will NOT get hurt.

I know, despite my doubts for the coming winter. The wound was fresh in Juli and has a daunting greyish colour now. The tree is growing in the full ground and had a very good growing season.

Marc,

trees do not die from big wounds usually. How often will I have to write this. A tree is not like a human being. It works VERY differernt. It has NOTHING to do with winter coming.

Ah, I've always read in "ye old " bonsai books that wounds should never be big, because the tree WILL die of big wounds. I should have know better, becauase I didn't cover up wounds in the past and every tree survived. Even my zelkova is still growing excellent. Very good point Walter, I will print this in my memory and forget the books.
