Hi Walter! I'm a huge fan of the work you do on your spruce. To me they represent true naturalistic conifers. I really enjoy all the new stones you are using for plantings, they look great with your wild trees! I was curious if you use some sort of mud wall to support the soil where the stone doesn't offer much support or do you just mound it with the usual substrate?

Alan,
no mud walls. I pot trees onto stones after they were in captivity since many yesars. Thus they have a very compact root ball since I never cut roots on coillected conifers if not absolutely necessary. This dense root ball is enough to live well on a stone.
